Our History
Before its transformation into the destination visitors know today, Restoration Yard was a bustling stableyard at the heart of the Dalkeith estate. Designed by renowned Scottish architect William Adam in the 1740s, the stables once housed the horses and grooms of the many distinguished guests welcomed to Dalkeith over the centuries.
As the years passed, the buildings gradually lost their original purpose. Yet their architectural significance and enduring character remained, inspiring a vision to preserve these remarkable Category A-listed stables and secure their future for generations to come.
A new chapter was about to begin.
Establishing
In 2014, an ambitious vision was set in motion. The aim was to breathe new life into the historic William Adam stables, transforming them into a welcoming destination where people could eat, shop, gather and spend time together.
Respecting the heritage of the buildings was central to the project. The name Restoration Yard was chosen to reflect both the careful restoration of the stableyard and the idea of creating a place where visitors could pause, reconnect and enjoy life's simple pleasures.
Following an extensive restoration, Restoration Yard opened its doors on 25 July 2016, beginning a new chapter in the story of the stables.
Present Day
Today, Restoration Yard is a vibrant destination where heritage and contemporary living come together. Visitors can browse thoughtfully curated collections, enjoy seasonal food and drink, and spend time with family and friends in a unique setting at the heart of Dalkeith Country Park.
From The Store and The Kitchen to the Coffee Bar, Foodhall and Wellness Space, every corner has been designed to offer a warm welcome and an experience worth lingering over. Whether you're meeting friends for coffee, enjoying a leisurely lunch or discovering something special to take home, Restoration Yard is a place to reconnect, relax and create lasting memories.
