The Store team are getting ready to welcome our next artist in residence, Katy Eccles. Joining us this Thursday 27th July, Katy’s botanical masterpieces will be a stunning addition to The Store walls as our third artist in residence. Katy Eccles is a botanical casting artist and the maker behind Imprint casts.  Her practice focuses on capturing the ephemeral, transient beauty of nature and preserving it through a unique casting process. All of Katy’s plaster botanical reliefs are created using flowers and foliage hand-picked from her mother’s garden and woodland in Fife; the flowers are then carefully pressed into clay and their delicate imprint preserved in plaster of Paris. Casting with Katy Eccles Not only will Katy’s work be adorning The Store walls from 26th July to 7th September, but Katy herself will be hosting a live botanical casting demonstration in at Restoration Yard on Thursday 17th August from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. Come along to see how Katy creates her botanical artworks step by step for this interactive demonstration and enjoy a Q&A session with Katy at the end. You will also have the opportunity to try your hand at casting during the demonstration if you feel like rolling up your sleeves and getting involved. Here at Restoration Yard we love all things beauty! We are therefore very excited to welcome the incredible Seilich Skincare to our curated beauty range in The Store. Seilich products are natural in the truest sense of the word; their ingredients having grown-up freely in a pure and wild place. They are based on powerful Scottish botanicals, handpicked from our wildflower meadow in the Lothians of Scotland. As well as being the source of ingredients, the meadows provide sanctuary for a variety of pollinating insects such as bees, butterflies and beetles. Meet the maker | Dr. Sally Gouldstone Created by botanist Dr Sally Gouldstone, Seilich was born from a love of nature and a passion to create products that weren’t just natural, but those that were actually good for nature. Sally tells us “I’ve always been passionate about nature. Growing up in a very remote wild place gave me a unique perspective on the world.” One day whilst walking down the health and beauty aisle of a supermarket (with lines of products plastered with images of nature) Sally had a sudden epiphany; “in the conservation sector we were constantly scratching around for hand-outs and grants, but in the commercial world people were actually making money out of nature.” Sally believed this money could be used to feed back into conservation projects. “With nature actually managing to pay for itself we could finally close the loop and provide a long term sustainable funding stream for conservation work.” And just like that, Seilich was born, named after Sally’s little one (Seilich meaning Willow in Gaelic). “At first we created a very small wildflower meadow and harvested a few flowers to make our first ever products. With profits from those first sales we created a larger meadow and took a course in making natural skincare products.” “I quickly found that our business model was not only good for nature, but also really really good for peoples skin!” Seilich today “We’re now 4 years in and the Seilich meadow is already a whopping 8 acres, supporting thousands of pollinating insects as well as a myriad of other species.” They have big plans to continue its growth, using profits from sales to create and manage more and more land for nature. “We hope to show that you can build a sustainable business that not only makes beautiful products from nature, but actually leaves nature in a better place than when it started.” “Although we still have far to go, I really feel that Seilich is making a small contribution to the future of all things wild and wonderful!” Shop Seilich at Restoration Yard Get you hands on your very own Seilich products! From takeaway treats and coffee & cake to sit down breakfast, lunch or even brunch – we have it all. Where will you decide to eat? Perhaps all of the above! The Kitchen The Kitchen is a gorgeous light-filled and spacious restaurant with stunning panoramic views of the estate and historic Orangerie. It is an idyllic place to eat to enjoy brunch or lunch all day, indoors or on our outdoor terrace. You’ll find child-friendly options and something tasty whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, gluten free or dairy free. Take a look at the spring/summer menu. With new dishes and menu classics it’s a tough choice…we’ll leave that part to you! We do recommend booking a table in advance as The Kitchen will book up quickly. The Kitchen is open from 09:30am every day. Book a Table in The Kitchen The Kitchen Terrace Make the most of sunshine season and opt for lunch on The Kitchen Terrace. Picture this, the sun is shining, birds are singing and you’re tucking into charcuterie to share, your favourite beverage in hand, surrounded by your nearest and dearest…perfection. The Kitchen Terrace is also the perfect place to eat at Restoration Yard if you are visiting with your four legged friend. We love welcoming your pups and will happily serve them with water and plenty of attention on arrival. Book a Table on The Terrace The Coffee Bar For those of you who are looking for an informal catch-up spot – with beautiful views of course – The Coffee Bar is the spot for you. Located just off of The Foodhall within The Store, you can pick up a hot (or cold!) beverage of your choice along with snacks, cakes, scones, soup and lots more goodies. Did we mention the panoramic views of The Orangerie as you bite into your weekend scone!? The Coffee Bar is open from 10am to 5pm every day. A popular Midlothian coffee stop, The Larder has sandwiches, wraps, kids lunch boxes, snacks and even treats for your pooch. Let us not forget the best of all! The Larder is home to our wide array of Giacopazzi’s ice cream. Cone or tub, flake or sprinkles, you decide.
