Beers and barbecues: the perfect combination! So with summer upon us (and the sun finally peeking its head out!) we’re celebrating all things Beer and BBQ for the entire month of July. Some of the most amazing craft beers are made right here in Scotland so we’ve stocked the Foodhall shelves with some of our favourites from local breweries including Hurly Burly Brewery, Born in the Borders, Thistly Cross Cider, Tempest, Cromarty and many, many more… (Scroll down for the hot list!) On Saturday 6th July, the Edinburgh Beer Factory, makers of Paolozzi and Bunk, will join us in the courtyard with their fabulous beer van for sampling and the chance to meet the makers. Plus, we’ll be firing up the BBQ alongside them, serving up samples of our fantastic range of barbecue rubs. Delicious! The courtyard will come alive again on Saturday 27th July, when Cross Borders will be popping up in their mobile beer bar, serving tasty samples and beer wisdom to all. Drooling yet? Here’s a taste of the best beers you’ll find in store this month… Drygate Brewing Co. The only Microbrewery operating in the historic heart of Glasgow, Drygate has been brewing with Open Doors and Open Minds for four years, mashing in for the first time in 2014. With a dash of Glasgow charm added in, favourites include Gladeye IPA, Disco Fork Lift Truck Mango Pale Ale (yes, you read it right) and Orinoco Mocha Milk Stout. Drygate beer, from £2.50. Stewarts Brewing Founded in 2004 by Steve and Jo Stewart, Stewarts Brewing is Edinburgh’s local, independent brewery. What started as a line up of three cask ales has now grown in to a flavourful range of bottled beers for the experimental drinker, with favourites including Radical Road (grapefruit and marmalade) and Ka Pai (mango, lychee and gooseberry). Delicious! Stewarts Brewering beers, from £1.95. Cross Borders Brewing Company Based just a stone’s throw from us in Eskbank, Dalkeith, Cross Borders has a special place in our hearts. Founders Gary and Jonny first met at the entrepreneurial age of 9 – and the rest is history! Their seasonal beer flavours are especially good, working with local wild food expert Amy Rankine of Hipsters & Hobos to incorporate locally foraged wild ingredients. Cross Borders beer, from £2.95. Born in the Borders As it’s name suggests, this multi-award winning microbrewery works its magic from Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, creating real ale from barley grown in the neighbouring fields. Beers include Foxy Blonde, Game Bird, Holy Cow, Dark Horse, Flower of Scotland and Gold Dust, and the brewery also runs a unique project called Wild Harvest, which uses locally foraged ingredients to flavour a separate range of beers. Born in the Borders beer, from £2.95. Edinburgh Beer Factory Family-run, independently owned and inspired by our beautiful home city, Edinburgh Beer Factory is on a mission to make beer beautiful. Inspired by the Edinburgh-born ‘Father of Pop Art’ Eduardo Paolozzi, their main focus is to showcase the art of brewing. Paolozzi took everyday objects and transformed them into works of art; Edinburgh Beer Factory takes overlooked and underestimated beer styles and present them at their beautiful best! Edinburgh Beer Factory beers, from £2.50. Tempest Brewing Co. If the jazzy can designs aren’t enough to tempt you, just wait ’til you taste some of Tempest‘s incredibly beers, brewed in Galashiels. What started in a brewpub in Canada (click here to read all about the brewery’s round-the-world beginnings), has grown into one of the best craft breweries in the UK, picking up Scottish Brewery of the Year 2016, and being named in RateBeer’s Top 100 Best Breweries in the World. Tempest beers, from £2.25. Hurly Burly Brewery Born in sunny Musselburgh, Hurly Burly‘s beers are craft-brewed and bottle-conditioned in a traditional style using the best, freshest and where possible local ingredients. They like to call it a “slow beer”: carefully considered, brewed, conditioned and bottled for your enjoyment. Our favourite bottle for the Summer? It doesn’t get more refreshing than an ice cold “Giddy Goat“, with hints of citrus and spice! Hurly Burly beers, from £2.60. Thistly Cross Cider Beer not your thing? Thistly Cross is Scotland’s award winning farmhouse cider, born out of a passion for making cider in the best possible way, combined with belief in the quality of Scottish produce – and asking ‘why not?’ We love the tasty range of unexpected flavours like elderflower, ginger, strawberry… and of course you can’t beat an original cloudy apple! Thistly Cross ciders, from £2.95. Cromarty Brewing Co. Cromarty‘s fanatical founding brewer studied the science of brewing at Heriot Watt University (alongside the art of beer making in student accommodation!) and the family-run brewery followed in 2011. There’s a splash of humour and oodles of character in every bottle – we particularly love the “Happy Chappy” and “Udder Madness”. Cromarty Beers, from £2.25.

Dads, we love you! We invited the lovely Niels Calvert, father of two and super talented photographer of Blue Sky Photography (the genius behind our Spring/Summer ’19 campaign!) to pop in and hand-pick his ultimate Father’s Day wish list. Here’s what he’d love this year (hint hint) . . . For the chef Copenhagen Food by Trine Hahnemann, £25. I admit that this is one book I actually own and is seriously well thumbed. It’s a combination of cook book and travel guide illustrated with cracking photography. Take recipes by chef Trine Hahnemann, add to it stories with her inside view of Copenhagen and blend with her tips on places to meet, eat and socialise in Copenhagen and you’ll be planning your visit in next to no time. We’ll see you on the aircraft… For the gym bag Heath Hair + Body Wash / Rescue Hair + Body Wash, £8.00 One that would easily find a home in my gym bag is this Hair + Body Wash and Rescue range by Heath. This combines bergamot, grapefruit and lemon to stimulate, cleanse and energise and smells super fresh with a subtle masculine scent. This product also ticks so many boxes being paraben and sulphate free and 90% natural – you could virtually eat this body wash. For rock ‘n’ rollers Hartford Liberty Print Shirts, £165 Hartford blends European Styling with West Coast of America casual styles and the bold Liberty London print caught my eye when browsing the menswear department. Springsteen and Eric Clapton are cited as being fans of Hartford so if it’s good enough for them… and ’til the end of June, you’ll get 30% off the entire Hartford collection with a Restoration Yard Loyalty Card. Win win! From the kids This selection of Father’s Day Gifts was chosen by our kids who were picking their own gifts for me. They decided that this card (£2.50) would be the ideal one for me (like what they did there!) and the chocolate No. 1 Dad Gold Medal (£3.95) would be a winner in my eye. I was slightly offended that they thought I needed to improve my range of jokes, but the Cheesy Jokes Set at £7.95 could only improve those that are in my (admittedly limited!) repertoire… For a pop of colour Roka Rucksack, £55 They say that we’re living in a digital age but yet I seem to have to carry an increasing number of things to and from shoots to the studio and home (and inevitably back!) Would I appreciate a Roka Rucksack? Yes I would thank you very much! And given the cracking bright yellow colour, I’d never again be able to say “has anyone seen my bag . . . ?” For planning world domination Orange Illuminated globe £95 This globe caught my eye when we shot the Christmas campaign for Restoration Yard and I still adore it. It would inspire us to travel more and talk and dream about other places we’d love to visit in this huge world of ours. What’s not to like. . . For the time traveler Kartel Watches, £120 This watch company has cleverly fused its Scottish roots with a contemporary design aesthetic and Restoration Yard has a great selection of men’s watches perfect for gifting this Father’s Day. I initially picked a gorgeous navy leather strapped watch but then spotted the grey Harris Tweed version pictured – how cool would this watch look with a kilt or grey suit? Pretty smart I think . . . For the perfect night in Create your own pack with beer, wine and crisps… With a cracking selection of wines, local beers and a gin range to satisfy every chap in the foodhall, you’d easily be able to combine favourite items and make a night-in pack of your own . . . Personally, I love the Palozzi beer by Edinburgh Beer Factory (£13.95) and would be very chuffed to discover these beers chilling in our fridge. A fine bottle of red wine (£12.95) would always be appreciated after a days work and I would gladly demolish the crisps (£2.50) possibly sharing the odd one or two! Just add a sofa and film for the prefect night in (and try not to fall asleep. . .) For the super stylish Dad The Perfect Tee and Shirts by Selected Homme I’m a huge fan of the Scandinavian clothing line Selected Homme and discovered Restoration Yard stocked this brand last year. I’ve picked up several pieces since and love the fit and quality of these garments. The Selected Homme Perfect Tees (£18) are a great staple for layering as we move into warmer months – available in store in grey, blue and white – buy one of each for maximum brownie points! Shirts by Selected Homme are cut brilliantly and are a little bit more interesting than the average run of the mill ranges on the high street. Pop in and you’ll see a great capsule collection picked by Restoration Yard and this summery pale blue number is a snip at £48. For the adventurer Fifty Places to Run before you die, £18.99 My running has taken a bit of a back seat over the last couple of months but this book could be just the ticket to kick start a new routine in the warmer summer months ahead. It’s part of a series by author Chris Santella with titles including Fifty Places to Camp / Hike / Dive / Play Golf – so think of it like a bucket list of places to do amazing life experiences (do them alone or with your others half as you prefer!) For gifts under £10 If you’re looking for a little thank you this Father’s Day, Eco Bath‘s Donkey’s Milk Soap on a Rope and the Pad of Butter Notepad both caught my design eye. The challenge has actually been curating a list of ten favourite Father’s Day gifts when there are so many gift ideas at Restoration Yard! My advice? Go with instinct and think of combining meaningful favourite things… Buy the Copenhagen book with the globe and start planning that trip… or buy my rucksack and put the 50 Places to Camp Before you Die book inside it… How about combining the Heath Hair + Body Wash with a Hartford Shirt and head out on a date night? As well as exclusive “Meet the Maker” events with Old Curiosity on 15th June and Eden Mill on 29th June, we’ll be serving up free samples and takeaway gin cocktail recipes every weekend this month, as well as showcasing a selection of our favourite hand-picked gins, all created right here in Scotland. Here’s a taste of what you’ll find in store… Edinburgh Gin This multi-award winning gin brand keeps delighting us with delicious new flavours – we love their classic gin, but be sure to try the Rhubarb & Ginger or Elderflower Liqueurs too… heaven! We especially enjoy their ‘Love Gin’ which has a beautiful light blush tint – enjoy yours with frozen berries and elderflower tonic. Eden Mill Gin, £35 Hills and Harbour Made tasty by the forests and coastlines of Galloway, “Hills and Harbour” is a smooth and vibrant gin incorporating Noble Fir needles and Bladderwrack seaweed from this special corner of Scotland. Hills and Harbour Gin, £45 The Old Curiosity Distillery Based only a few miles from Restoration Yard at The Secret Herb Garden, all the herbs in this gin are grown, picked, dried and infused on site so you can be rest assured your favourite tipple is 100% natural. What’s more, each flavour changes colour when tonic is added! Old Curiosity Gin, from £7 Doddie’5 Gin This gin not only tastes incredible, but all profits go towards a fantastic cause too. A collaboration between Burleighs Gin and the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, the gin has been crafted alongside Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir and all profits go directly to the Foundation, helping to fund vital research into Motor Neuron Disease. Doddie’5 Gin, £42.50 Lilliard Our next gin takes us to the Scottish Borders where ingredients are found and foraged, then handcrafted in a tiny copper still. The result is a light gin with a complex floral palette, reflecting the local landscape and the abundant natural resources of the Southern Scottish Valleys. Lilliard Gin, from £33.50 Deerness Distillery This lovely award-winning gin is a true reflection of the Orkney Islands’ ever-changing seascape, offering a sensory journey through warm spices, hints of citrus and – of course – juniper. Deerness Distillery Gin, from £41.95 The Botanist Islay is the Hebridean home of The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, sitting on the very edge of the Scottish west coast in the teeth of the Atlantic weather systems. Twenty-two island botanicals are hand-picked locally and sustainably by an in-house forager to create this super smooth gin. Who said menswear was all about the greige? Our menswear department has doubled in size this season, offering more clothing and accessories than ever before. Take your front row seat… On 28th March, we welcomed the new season in style with our Spring/Summer fashion show, showcasing our incredible new collections while also raising money for Make 2nds Count. We had a fantastic evening meeting our lovely customers and cooing over all the exciting Spring/Summer collections. A big thank you to our wonderful models (a stylish team of Restoration Yard staff and enthusiastic customers!) who worked the catwalk like pros and brought all our favourite new styles to life. We were especially honoured to have one of our lovely customers who has become part of the Restoration Yard family and is living with secondary cancer herself, joining us on the catwalk. It’s all about print… A new season of fabulous fashion has finally arrived in the Store and we couldn’t be more excited to share our favourite pieces with you! We’re loving the plethora of print and colours for Spring/Summer ’19 – fresh greens, soft blues and pops of brights from coral pinks to zings of yellow. From shell tops and blouses to wrap dresses and light throw-on trousers, expect garden florals mixed in with Dutch Delft and ethnic influences.
