Lorraine Young, Pilates Teacher, The Wellbeing Lab Pilates is all about slow, controlled movements—but its fitness and health rewards are supercharged. But just why is Pilates so good for you? We talk to our newest Wellbeing Lab teacher Lorraine Young to find out. What brought you to teaching Pilates? Pain. I had two herniated disc and was scheduled to get an operation. The surgeon asked me to do Pilates for three months in preparation for it. I was already a personal trainer and fitness instructor. I loved cardio and more energetic classes, so my response was ‘Pilates is boring!’ However, I was motivated by the pain and did the three months and then didn’t need the operation after all. I was so impressed with the method that I decided to train as a Pilates instructor. I continued with my education and training and I am now the senior tutor for Pilates teachers with Drummond Education, with responsibility for the whole of Scotland. What’s the difference between yoga and Pilates? Pilates can be more beneficial for recovery, while both yoga and Pilates can help prevent injury. Yoga is wonderful for connecting mind, body and spirit, and will gradually increase your flexibility and aid relaxation. Pilates concentrates more on core strength and postural alignment. This can be wonderful for problems such as muscular imbalance, recovery from injury or rehabilitation, as a complement to physiotherapy and much more. Pilates is so good for you as allows the body to move more freely, enabling us to remain strong and flexible throughout our lives. Does it require any special equipment? No, all you need is a mat if you want to use your own. We will provide the rest. Can I do it if I have an injury like a sore back? Research suggests that Pilates can be very effective for relieving back problems as it concentrates on core strength, flexibility, and posture. However, for anyone with a specific back problem (like a herniated disc!), we need to know in advance so we can provide safe and appropriate exercise. There is always a way for anyone to practice Pilates. Can it help me lose weight? Pilates is an excellent element of a health and fitness regime, and particularly useful for firming up the body during a weight loss programme. There are other forms of exercise which burn more calories but having core body strength is vital to do these safely, which is exactly what Pilates can give you. I’m quite stiff! Can I do Pilates ? Absolutely! Pilates is good for you because will help to develop your flexibility. It will be challenging at first, but it’s so important to move our bodies and the later we leave it, the less mobile we will be in later life. Why should I do Pilates ? Pilates is good for you as it will improve your posture, muscle tone, balance and your flexibility and will relieve stress and tension. It also helps reduce injury, which is why so many athletes do Pilates. It’s fun as well as challenging, and what’s not to like about a toned body. Why do you love Restoration Yard? I love Restoration Yard for the friendliness of the team who are always happy to help. Dalkeith Country Park is beautiful and very therapeutic to visit. It’s great that there is something for everyone here. If you haven’t been yet, I thoroughly recommend it, and the Pilates classes of course. He has been brewing delicious craft beers for the last decade and uses his encyclopaedic knowledge of beer styles and trained palate to create some of the most delicious beers in Scotland. Michael loves to spend most of his free time in the mountains and as a keen mountaineer and fell runner he has visited most of Britain’s walking and climbing regions. Following a move to Edinburgh, Michael created Top Out in 2013. What’s in the name? Well, top out means to finish a route or to reach the top of a mountain. That spirit is reflected in all Top Out bottle and can labels, which feature the contour maps of different Munros and detailing the route to each summit. The next natural step was to produce a range of bottled beers and to extend to a range of cask and keg brews to accommodate the more experimental drinker. Edinburgh Gold, £2.50, is beautifully balanced golden ale with a delicate hop aroma, subtle malty sweetness and a crisp finish. Radical Road, £2.75, is a pale ale style beer. Its medium-bodied and bursting with notes of pine, grapefruit and citrus, providing long-lasting white foam and smooth bitterness. NB Distillery Steve and Vivienne Muir, owners of NB Distillery “We believe in creating perfection. Whatever the product.” NB Distillery The NB Distillery Story Steve and Viv started off experimenting in their home kitchen with a pressure cooker and some old central heating pipes. They admit it was hardly glamorous, but this makeshift ‘still’ was a great way to test hundreds of different botanicals with water to see which worked together the best. After perfecting their NB gin recipe, they invested in a custom-built still made to our exact specifications by the world’s oldest and most revered still-makers. It was a still that had to be able to precisely replicate their tried and tested recipe. That was when they moved out of their kitchen and into a small unit in North Berwick to continue distilling and growing the product range, which now also includes NB Rum. It’s summertime in the capital so where is best to enjoy the best outdoor dining around Edinburgh when there is a break in the clouds? It was a hard job but we had to do it. Yes, we sampled the fayre of some of the best outdoor dining in the city to give you our top five round-up. Cold Town House Well, what’s good enough for Prince William is good enough for us. The roof top terrace of the Cold Town House in the Grassmarket is pretty hard to beat for some of the best views of the city and its atmosphere on a sunny summer’s day feels like you’re on holiday. For those who like to be seen in all the right places it is definitely one for the list. And the food? Well, it is simple but rather wonderful. Woodfired pizzas and nibbles. We recommend the Holyrood pizza and the halloumi fries. Yes please. As for its Cold Town beers – they are just the ticket for a little afternoon lunch gathering. Best for: Views of the castle and a great atmosphere4 Grassmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2JU Timberyard This beautiful restaurant in an old brick warehouse is a family-run business which believes in sourcing from small local suppliers. The result is that both the daily menu and the five course menu offer high-end deliciousness. Its south-facing courtyard is a joy to sit in on a sunny day but equally enjoyable on colder days with its courtyard’s wood-burning stove. This outdoor dining is small but that makes a table here all the more covetable. So get booking now. Best for: Foodies will adore the menus 10 Lady Lawson St, Edinburgh EH3 9DS The Sheep Heid Inn A little off the beaten track in Duddingston but well worth the trip. The Sheep Heid’s beer garden is an excellent place to enjoy summer sunshine with fabulous hearty food. There are sharing plates, pizzas, burgers and more. On Sundays there are five fresh roasts to choose from too. Oh and it’s a gastro pub with history. The inn’s history is said to date back all the way to 1390 and claims visits across those centuries from kings across Scottish history. James VI is alleged to have gifted a ram’s head snuff box which may or may not have given the inn its name. But saving the best for last – not every gastro pub has a skittle alley. Not outside of course but a welcome add on for a great visit. Best for: Hearty food and great Sunday roasts 43-45 The Causeway, Edinburgh EH15 3QA The Kitchen at Restoration Yard Another gem just on the outskirts of the city is The Kitchen at Restoration Yard. The Terrace of this beautiful restaurant overlooks River Esk. The Kitchen’s all-day menus include a belting breakfasts offer. Are you an avid smashed avocado fan, eggs benedict buff, in need of the full Scottish or a vegan burrito? The breakfast menu has something for all tastes. Then there are luscious lunches too including light bites, healthy salads or marvellous mains. All diets are catered for. Oh and the best bit is that four-legged friends of the canine variety are welcomed on The Terrace too. The friendly team will bring out a water bowl for thirsty dogs and if you want your fur baby to enjoy a delicious snack too, well you can pick them up a Dog Liver Cake before your booking on The Terrace from The Larder.
