Our Story

Shop Wonderful. Eat Local. Restore Balance. Today Restoration Yard is a Retail Store, Online Store, Restaurant, Coffee Bar and tranquil Wellbeing Space, set around a beautiful Tuscan inspired courtyard. We’re located at Dalkeith Country Park just 20 minutes from Edinburgh. Families and friends come here to experience the extraordinary and make residing memories of a restorative day well spent, together. But this was not always its story. This stableyard is rich in history reaching way beyond what it is today.

Before its current reinvention, Restoration Yard was a thriving 18th century stableyard housing the horses and grooms of visiting royalty and dignitaries. Think Mary Queen of Scots to Sir Walter Scott. However, after years of neglect the beautiful stableyard had fallen into disrepair. The germ of what Restoration Yard is now grew out of the need to restore these category one-listed stables within Dalkeith Country Park. Over the years, these architecturally important 18th century William Adam stables had slowly deteriorated until Buccleuch, the organisation that looks after park’s interests, realised something had to be done.

In 2014 the vision was set. The aim was to establish a beautiful store, restaurant and also a wellbeing studio. The project to reconfigure the park’s dilapidated stables as a destination day out for all the family began. Keeping to true to the park’s heritage was core. We are Restoration Yard because the word ‘restoration’ resonated. It reflects our reinterpretation of the beautiful stables as well as the Buccleuch family history stretching back to the restoration of King Charles II and it reflects our dream to restore sense of self, family and wellbeing. It represents our idea that in this busy, modern world we all need a place to restore mind, body and soul. At Restoration Yard every member of the family can come, nourish themselves whether it’s with seasonal food, shopping in a thoughtfully curated environment or attending a wellbeing event.

So Restoration Yard opened its doors on 25 July 2016.

The store stocks fashion alongside homeware, beauty, gifts, books, stationery, toys and babywear. The restaurant – The Kitchen – is popular for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and private events. Diners enjoy the beautifully designed interiors while looking out over the estate’s 18th century Orangerie and the River Esk. The Coffee Bar, with its home-baked cake selection, is a hub for families, friends and business meetings. The Foodhall sits alongside and is a favourite for foodies. The Wellbeing space offers a range of wellness events run by third parties.

Every day our story continues and you are part of it because, most importantly, we designed Restoration Yard with you in mind to delight, restore and create memories. Come on in and enjoy.
